Congratulations to CCSO member CIW Sergeant Marina Holmes, who was honored by the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce as 2026 Supervisor of the Year for her exceptional leadership and contributions to public safety! She was recognized alongside local law enforcement officers, firefighters and other first responders at the Salute to Public Safety Luncheon on March 19. The CIW (A) Chief Deputy Warden proudly presented awards to Sergeant Holmes and to CIW Officer Veronica Veloz, who was named 2026 Employee of the Year. The CIW Honor Guard also participated in the event’s opening ceremony. We applaud Sergeant Holmes, Officer Veloz and their fellow honorees for their outstanding service to their communities!

Today is the first day of spring (although in many parts of California, this week’s heat wave has made it feel more like summer)! Daylight Saving Time begins tomorrow, so don’t forget to set your clocks forward one hour. Whether you love the time change (brighter evenings!) or hate it (losing an hour of sleep!), it’s a fact that your circadian rhythms may be disrupted for several days. Please try to get good rest and plenty of natural light, and be sure to stay alert and safe at work and while driving. Enjoy the extra daylight ahead!

It's scholarship season! Now through April 30, CCSO members' immediate family who are seniors in high school, plan to attend college, have a solid GPA, are active in the community and have a drive for excellence are invited to apply for one of four CCSF scholarships (one $1,500 and three $750 awards will be distributed). This February marks the 100th anniversary of Black History Month, which honors the heritage and achievements of African Americans past, present and future and their vital role in shaping our nation. This is a great time to celebrate the many contributions made by Black members of our profession and our organization. You can check out the stories of some pioneering correctional supervisors, officers and staff members at www.cdcr.ca.gov/insidecdcr/2025/02/06/black-history-month-honors-contributions, including Otis Loggins, the first Black member of the Department to promote to captain; Bertram Griggs, California’s first Black prison warden; and Ruth Rushen, the first woman and first African American to serve as Department director.
